The region's combination of terra rossa soils over limestone, cool nights despite warm days, and over 160 years of winemaking heritage creates ideal conditions for aromatic whites. Clare Valley Riesling is particularly celebrated for its capacity to age — developing rich petrol-and-citrus complexity over a decade or more.

Clare Valley Riesling is renowned for its lime juice intensity, crushed slate minerality, and exceptional natural acidity. This acid backbone is the key to the variety's ageing potential: a well-made Clare Valley Riesling at 10 years old is a completely different and more complex wine than when first released. The region consistently produces wines that compete with the best German and Alsatian Rieslings, at a fraction of the price.

Millon's Clare Valley estate at Armagh grows Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Grenache. Clare Valley fruit is central to several Millon ranges, including the Clare's Secret range — named for the valley — and the Estate range. Millon's Botrytis Riesling, which won the Trophy for Best Sweet White Wine at the 2025 Melbourne Royal Wine Show, is made from Clare Valley Riesling grapes.

Clare Valley's terroir is defined by terra rossa soils (red clay-loam over limestone), a warm growing season moderated by cool nights at 400–500 metres elevation, and low rainfall. The limestone subsoil drains well while retaining enough moisture for dry-farmed viticulture, and it contributes the mineral backbone that Clare Valley wines are known for. This combination of soil, altitude, and temperature variation produces the trademark acidity and mineral expression of Clare Valley Riesling.

Clare Valley is approximately 100 kilometres north of Adelaide, around a 1.5-hour drive. The wine region runs roughly north to south for about 30 kilometres at elevations of 400–500 metres. The drive from Adelaide passes through the Southern Flinders Ranges and makes for a scenic day trip, with the option of combining a visit to Millon's cellar door in the Barossa Valley on the return journey.
